A future proof, off grid home for a multi generational household.
The design is a modern interpretation of a rural Suffolk farm house, where the newest technologies are spliced with the old to make an efficient, healthy, appropriate, multi generation, off grid home.
The starting point was researching the site and considering how new architecture could quietly slip into the landscape and meet the specific planning policy demands.
The site was rich in history and had character that could be translated into architectural form in subtle ways that were appropriate to the surrounding gentle landscape.
The building continues the historic continuity of land use with the pattern of isolated dwellings where occupants make use of the land in some way to support themselves.
The design was not judged simply on the appearance of the building alone, but through its working relationship to the landscape, its form of construction, the way that it is intended to be lived in and its richness of detail.
What is Paragraph 80?
Paragraph 80 is part of the National Planning Policy Framework that covers exceptional circumstances by which new isolated dwellings in the open countryside can be agreed.
Criteria ‘e’ of the policy pushes to significantly improve design quality ensuring that:
(e) the design is of exceptional quality, in that it:
· is truly outstanding, reflecting the highest standards in architecture, and would help to raise standards of design more generally in rural areas; and
· would significantly enhance its immediate setting, and be sensitive to the defining characteristics of the local area.
